A miniature timing chip is tied to the shoelaces of an athlete. This chip starts to send its signal when it crosses various mats which are placed at the Start & Finish gates and at designated split points on the course. These mats act as the electronic field required for activating the chip signal; the signal is strongest in the middle of each field. The appropriate time is allocated to this signal and duly recorded.
You need toread the instructions given to you whilst collecting your chip, prior to tying the chip to your shoelaces.
hope this helps
