Soon to retire world marathon champion, Doha 2019 – Ruth Chepngetich has cracked the half marathon world record on Sunday, at Istanbul.
Chepngetich completed the run staggeringly with a timing of 1:04:02. She managed to prune away 29 seconds from the foregoing record of 1:4:31 set in February 2020 by Ethiopia’s Yeshaneh in UAE.
This was the first time three women have finished inside 65 minutes in one half marathon.
Her competitors being, the two-time 5000m world champion, Obiri & Ethiopia’s Yehualaw. This was Chepngetich’s third win which was well 1 minute 30 seconds within her last time’s win.
This is a second big win for a woman athlete after a smashing victory of Britain’s Beth Potter. Though the win due to the drug-testing issues hasn’t been approved of yet.
In the men’s race, Kibiwott Kandie, who is a world record holder, brought pride to Kenya by winning with a course record of 59:35 against his fellow countryman Geoffrey Kamworor in Valencia .
The women’s race terminated with the following results: 1. Ruth Chepngetich (Ken) 1:04:02; 2. Yalemzerf Yehualaw (Eth) 1:04:40; 3. Hellen Obiri (Ken) 1:04:51.
