Thonakal Gopi: The marathoner amidst the chaos

Thonakal Gopi experienced the greatest day of his life five years ago at the 2016 Olympics. He shared this magnificent moment 10,000 kilometers away from Sulthan Bathery (a town in Wayanad, Kerala) in Rio with other great athletes.

Gopi is sponsored by the sports brand Asics and currently lives in Bengaluru where he also trains. He is skeptical about making it to the 2021 edition of the Summer Games due to the current uncertainty since alot of the events were postponed or cancelled last year. Following the prevailing situation, his training and schedule both are in disarray which makes the ticket to the upcoming Olympics a far-fetched dream.

Gopi, now a part of the Indian Army also won a gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championship in 2017. He topped the Tata Mumbai Marathon podium in the successive year and in 2019 entered the Seoul International Marathon bereft of a coach or support staff. Though being deprived of one he still managed to clock his personal best time of two hours, 13 minutes, and 39 seconds.
