Meet the new world record holder of 5,000m race – Joshua Cheptegei

The celebrated runner Joshua Cheptegei is in news yet again and this time for breaking Kenenisa Bekele’s world record in the 5,000m category, with a performance of 12:35.36 at the Monaco Diamond League on 14th Aug.

16 years ago, the 21-year young Bekele set the record with a performance of 12:37.35. This year, Uganda’s ace runner just broke it by 2 seconds. Cheptegei maintained consistency throughout the run and reached the finish line within 59.64. The star performer looked calm and composed most of the time and only seemed a little grimaced in the remaining 50m. As a matter of fact, he stayed focused and present enough to stop his watch as he finished the race. He is also a record holder in the 5K on-road category with a performance of 12:51, which took place in Monaco, back in February before the pandemic.
