The Ethiopian Olympic Trials were held in Hengelo, the Netherlands on Tuesday where Letesenbet Gidey stole the show! She won the 10,000-meter final, setting a new world record of 29:01.03. This happened just two days after Sifan Hassan broke the women’s 10,000-meter world record at the World Athletics Continental Tour: Huelva on Sunday with a 29:06.82 performance.
This is Gidey’s second world record feat. She broke the 5,000-meter record last year. Her first one was in October 2020 at the NN Valencia World Record Day in Valencia, Spain where she set a new 5,000-metre record. She broke the previous world record of 14:11.15 (set by Tirunesh Dibaba in 2008) by running 14:06.62.
Talking about her remarkable performance and future goals, Gidey said “I expected to run a world record. I’d like to try and break the world record again and break 29 minutes.”
