Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) recently announced a four-year-long ban on Kenya’s former world marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang. He was found violating anti-doping rules. The anti-doping wing of AIU, World Athletics, said Kipsang’s ban would run from January 10 this year, with all results dating back to April 12, 2019, to be rubbed.
Kipsang has a brilliant marathon record. The police officer in his late 30s has been the winner of a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and has championed the marathons in London (2012, 2014), New York (2014) and Berlin (2013); he also set a then-world record of 2 hr 3 min 23 sec. He is now a part of a long list of Kenyan distance stars who have recently been found doping.
Previously, the Rio Olympics marathon winner Jemima Sumgong was banned for four years in 2017, followed by the Olympic gold medallist and three-time 1500m world champion Asbel Kiprop.
