I know some people who are interested to run. But they have arthritis problem and have acute joint pain. If they want, how can they start running or even can they participate in Marathon?

Hi Shailendra,

People who have arthritic problem and / or acute joint pain, but are interested in participating in the ADHM, I would suggest them to start on a Walk - Run - Walk program and only do Great Delhi Run (7 km) this time. More can be found on Walk - Run - Walk here http://web.mac.com/drrajatchauhan/iWeb/B2F/Walk%20-%20Run.html

I start they start slow and shorter distances and figure out what works for them.

It's important to note that this is generic advice. Rule of thumb is "Listen to your body". And all our bodies are different.

I would also like to point you to a study which showed walking / running is actually good for arthritis. Check the link: http://web.mac.com/drrajatchauhan/iWeb/B2F/Running%20Topics.html

"Recent scientific studies have shown that running might actually protect you from knee arthritis. A study done by scientists and doctors from Stanford showed that by moving and loading your knees during walking and running, they become accustomed to those movements.

Its not running that causes an injury, its incorrect muscle imbalance, poor running technique and tools, in this case shoes, that injure you. If done the correct way, lifelong running and physical activity is great for you."

Keep miling & smiling.

Rajat
