amatuer to professional runner

Hi,

I have been running intermittently for almost one year. I am 5 feet 8 inches tall and weight around 74kgs.
When i started to ran, i was at 82kgs. SO at that time running at 10km/hr on a trade mill for about 30 minutes or so used to cause a lot of pain in my legs or ankle joints. SO much so that sometimes i had to take a week off. I improvised on my running plan a lot but nothing seemed to work out. So I started on the paddling machine and brought down my weight to it;s current level. Now I have resumed running after almost 6 months or so. I run for almost 30 mins at 8 km/hr (approx 3.5 kms). So far I have experience no pain in my legs.

Please let me know how should I progress and achieve bigger milestone on my running journey.
My goal is to run for half marathon, someday.

Regards
Deep

Hey Deep,

Firstly, congrats on doing a good job at reducing your weight, without harming yourself, which usually happens.

Secondly, I suggest you either do Great Delhi Run (7km) or do a run-walk program for Half Marathon (21 km) during Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. Check this link for more on Run-Walk: http://web.mac.com/drrajatchauhan/iWeb/B2F/Walk%20-%20Run.html

Please let me know if you need help with training plans.

Keep miling & smiling.

Rajat

thans a lot rajat for being so supportive.

i happened to read some bits of ur marathon story and I am truly inspiried. It felt like some of my doubted feeling found their resonance. Now I know that no distance is big distance for running. I have always loved running and I have had very regretful 6 months when I cudn;t run regularly. But at the same time I have been quite regular on the paddling machine and have reached to a distance of 13 km in 1 hr.

But running is where my heart is. so i want to pick up on it now. I am in bangalore so cannot take part in ADHM. Anyways, bangalore has it;s share of half marathons in plenty so in a way it is gud for me if i can be ready for the next bangalore half marathon. I have gone through some calculation about running/walking program. But I think it is quite generic so is it possible to get some more personal advise on some of the following points:

1. i can run continously for about 20 mins at 8km/hr without any breathlessnes and definitely i can push myself for more. So how long should i run before taking a walk break.

2. If i am running at 8, what shohuld be the ideal walk speed . to me 5 - 5.5 is relaxed walking. duration of the break i guess depends how long it takes for me to recover and feel like resume running. still is there any recommended min - max walk break time.

3. since i have never followed run - walk - run regimen so please advice on what should be the duration of the complete session during one complete RUN. Is it a good idea to fix the distance or should i follow the time. Personally i feel distance covered is much more of prized achievement:)

thanks for your time!
